The Duplicating Quarter Trick

by Charles Blachly

The Magic

The Magician asks for an ordinary quarter from a member of the audience. With rolled-up sleeves and empty hands (save the quarter), he proceeds to place the quarter under a "magical scarf" (or similar item). The magician invokes some magic words, removes the scarf, and, voila! the coin has magically doubled! At this point, the magician takes a bow and is free to make a witty remark about repeating the process ad nauseum for some "real fun."

The Trick

This is one of my favorite tricks; it can be performed in a little impromptu close-up magic show. The magician's hands really are empty and nothing is up his sleeve. He gets a quarter from an audience member and places it under a scarf. Now comes the magic (or trick, depending on who's watching!). While the quarter is covered, the magician folds the coin in half while distracting the audience with his magic words and flamboyant gesturing of his free hand. The coin should look like this:

Above: The folded quarter passes as TWO quarters from the front!

Of course, the audience will only see the front of the bent coin and will assume that it is really two separate coins!

Sometimes the most perplexing tricks are the easiest to understand.
